My last day in Paarl. I’m on the train on my way to work; I’ve left the family behind that made my move here so easy, who welcomed me into their home with open arms and open hearts. But I’m not sad, somehow, because they are now very firmly part of my new life.
A song plays. It’s a catchy tune.
“Gazing out my window at the stars up in the sky. The sun is high up on the other side.”
I wonder about the man singing these words. I’m looking out the train window, at the sun up in the sky, wondering if somewhere, right now, he’s looking out his window, at the stars that inspired him. We share this moment, this introspection.
The train moves on.
