|I may be flushed, and out of breath, but DAMN that felt good!|
I have taken up fencing again, along with a colleague, Maru, who is doing it for the first time. The warm up sessions were incredibly hard – at the end of the warm up, I wondered if I was having a heart attack, an asthma attack, or a lethal bout of hypochondria. There were equal chances it was actually all three.
Because I have fenced before, the coach decided to throw me in the deep end – I fenced three bouts, and as expected, got a solid thrashing. Not total white-wash, mind – I DID manage to scare a few hits off the two gents, and was quite proud of those, too – I had my mind working like it should, on the piste – parries were good, but my ripostes were slow – unfitness be DAMNED! I had excellent attack-on-preps, and counter attacks, and some brilliant distance parries and evasive target moves, which got me some nice one-light-only points.
To non-fencers, this is gibberish, to the select few, who DO fence, they will know, all too well, why I swell with pride as I write these words.
It has been a very very good day.
